INFORMATION FOR

INFORMATION FOR THE HOTEL INDUSTRY

Child sexual exploitation could be happening where you work. It is child abuse and a crime.  It can happen in all communities and in many different places, including your hotel.

By law premises licence holders and supervisors have to make sure that children are protected from physical, psychological and moral harm at their premises.

Unfortunately, perpetrators aren’t always easy to spot.  But, you can help by being vigilant and knowing what to look out for:

  • A lot of visitors to and from one room, including adults or young people

  • Young people with adults where there is no obvious appropriate relationship, something doesn’t feel right or other signs are present

  • Parties in rooms

  • Evidence of drugs, alcohol, sexual activity such as condom wrappers and lubricants

  • Guests insisting on paying cash

  • Young people loitering in the lobby area or hallways

  • Guests refusing to provide ID

  • Guests insisting on paying by cash

  • Young boys and girls looking scared, withdrawn, being spoken to in an inappropriately sexual or aggressive manne

  • Guests who appear to be secretive about their stay or who try to conceal their activities in their room

  • Young boys and girls in possession of or under the influence of drugs and/or alcohol

  • Guests who request to be close to fire exits or take a particular interest in their location

WE HAVE A NUMBER OF RESOURCES, INCLUDING POSTERS AND LEAFLETS SPECIFICALLY FOR THE HOTEL INDUSTRY, ALONG WITH CHECKLISTS FOR RECEPTION AND HOUSEKEEPING STAFF AND STAFF INDUCTION TRAINING. THERE ARE ALSO USEFUL FILMS YOU CAN WATCH 'DO YOU SEE ME' AND 'CHOOSE TO END IT'.

Whatever business you’re in, everyone has a responsibility to help protect children from child sexual exploitation.

WHEREVER YOU ARE, IT IS YOUR RESPONSIBILITY TO MAKE SURE YOU AND THOSE YOU WORK WITH:

BUSINESSES

As a business you may notice strange behaviour involving children.  You may see young people or groups of men being dropped off at different locations.  It may be nothing, but it might be something.  If you are worried, it is important that you don’t keep any concerns to yourself.

You can also watch 'Deceived' a film produced by a private hire company in Dudley.

TAXI INDUSTRY: WE NEED YOUR EYES AND EARS

LICENSED PREMISES

Licensed premises are usually places people go to socialise, have a drink and enjoy themselves, which provides an ideal environment for grooming and sexual exploitation.

Adults may take young people to these venues to make them feel special, buying them food and alcohol to develop a relationship of trust, before they go on to abuse and exploit them.

It is therefore vital that licence holders and those who work in licensed premises are aware of the signs of CSE and make sure they share concerns if they see something. Keeping children safe is everyone’s responsibility and working together, with businesses, helps protect young people from becoming victims.

It is also the responsibility of licence holders and their managers to make sure suitable control measures are in place at licensed venues to protect children from harm. This is a legal requirement under the Licensing Act 2003.
